How to Track a Bill in Iowa

One of the questions I get asked most is, “How do I track what’s happening with legislation that affects me?”

State government can feel frustrating to follow and, frankly, confusing. It’s not always obvious how to track a bill's progress once it’s introduced. I encourage you to stay informed, as it’s one of the best ways to stay involved and ensure that your voice is heard.

Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to help you stay informed.

Step 1: Visit the Iowa Legislature Website

The best place to get started is the official Iowa Legislature website:

Visit legis.iowa.gov

This website provides valuable information on legislative activity, including progress updates and daily session details.

Step 2: Find the Bill You’d Like to Follow

Once you’ve reached the website:

1.    Click Legislation
2.    Select BillBook
3.    Type the bill number into the search box

Bill numbers are labeled based on where they were introduced:
•    HF (House File) – Introduced in the Iowa House
•    SF (Senate File) – Introduced in the Iowa Senate

Examples:
•    HF 584 = House File 584
•    SF 123 = Senate File 123

When the bill number appears in the search results, click it to open the page.

Step 3: Check bill status

Once you’re on the bill page, you’ll find several sections that show how bills are moving and their status.

Bill History:
This section gives a timeline of actions taken on a bill and its status. You might see steps such as:
•    Assigned to a committee
•    Subcommittee meeting
•    Committee vote
•    Floor debate
•    Passed or stalled

Typically, the most recent action item is listed at the top, making it easier to track the latest activity on that bill.

Bill Text:
This allows you to read the full text of the bill. It includes any amendments or changes made throughout the process.

How to Stay Updated

To avoid checking the website daily, the Iowa Legislature offers an easier alternative: email alerts.

Here’s how to get started:
1.    On legis.iowa.gov, find Subscribe
2.    Choose Bills & Rules Watch
3.    Add the bill number (example: HF 584)
4.    Enter your email and save
You’ll get an email whenever something happens with the bill.

Staying Informed Matters

Staying informed on legislation gives you the opportunity to share your voice and make an actual difference. You’ll know when a bill is being debated or voted on, so take the opportunity to get involved and reach out to your lawmakers.

We need to hear your perspective and understand how these bills are affecting you. Government works best when everyone stays informed and involved. I believe that government should be as transparent and accessible to every single Iowan.

I hope this information provides clarity and a sense of purpose, so that together we can work towards a better Iowa. If you ever have any questions about a bill or how to get involved, please reach out to me. I love hearing directly from the people I serve and ensuring your priorities and concerns are represented.
